The lawmaker representing the Cross River South Senatorial District, Senator Gershom Bassey has described the move by the Senate to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari as non-partisan.

Senator Bassey also argued that the proposed move to impeach the president is not about opposition, but about the Senate and the safety of Nigerians.

DAILY REPORT reported how the minority caucus of the Red Chamber staged a walkout in protest against the president over persistent rise in insecurity, last week.

The lawmakers chanted “Buhari Must Go” and issued a six-week ultimatum for the executive to allay the fears of Nigerians.

However, in an interview with Punch earlier in the week, Bassey talked down attempts by certain quarters to describe the demand by the lawmakers on President Buhari to fix the country as partisan.

“It’s not just the opposition, and I think a number of our leaders have made that point. That point was made again today (last Thursday). It’s about the Senate. Not just because we are the ones speaking.

“We (the opposition) are the ones at the forefront. But it’s not just about us. It is about the entire National Assembly,” he said.

Quizzed on if the move is driven by opposition members, Bassey said the action is to put the executive on its toes and to ensure it meets the expectations of Nigerians.

“you feel secure in Nigeria? So how can it be political? We’re not talking politics here. We’re talking security. Security is not politics. And security should not be politicised. Like I’ve said to you, this is a bipartisan effort to ensure that the executive is up and doing.

Senator Bassey also expressed confidence that the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan will agree with the decision of the lawmakers if they resort to impeaching the President.

“I think the Senate president said it yesterday when we were talking about something else. And he said, “Look, it’s not about him, it’s about the Senate. He presides over the Senate.

“And it’s not about him; he’s just the presiding officer. It’s about the entire Senate. So yes, I’m sure that the presiding officer will agree with whatever the Senate as a body agrees to,” Senator Bassey added.

The six-week ultimatum and threat to impeach the President followed consecutive attacks on security formations in Abuja by terrorists in recent weeks.
