ASUU UPDATE: Meeting With FG Didn’t Go Well – ASUU President, Prof. Osedeke

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke has revealed that Tuesday’s meeting with the federal government did not go well.

Osodeke told newsmen after the meeting that the government did not make any new offers towards ending the strike.

Though, the ASUU President did not give much details, he noted that the union will address the public after meeting with members.

‘‘It wasn’t good. We didn’t sign anything; they did not come with anything good. I can’t go into details. We will talk to our members first before we talk to the press. We represent our members,’’ Osodeke said.

Prior to the president’s comments, a member of the ASUU National Executive Council, said the government was ‘unserious’ in its attempt to salvage the situation.

The official emphatically stated that there was no hope in sight for students to go back to school at the moment as the proposal presented to the union was unreasonable.

“They are not serious. I can’t go over the details with you because the president is responsible for disseminating the information. The proposal presented was unreasonable. There is no hope in sight”.

DAILY REPORT earlier reported that the union members staged a walk out on the renegotiation committee led by Prof. Nimi Briggs for not complying with its demands.

An ASUU source said the committee only begged the union to end the strike without meeting its demands.

Another source earlier said that the committee begged the union to resume school with a promise that its demands will be added into the 2023 budget.

“The meet with the FG’s team was headed by Professor Nimi Briggs and it started by 12:00pm and ended by 3:00pm. There was no new offer on the table, they simply begged us to call off the strike”, the source said.

The ongoing ASUU strike, which is in its sixth month, started on Monday 14, February 2022, over the government’s failure to meet up with demands of the union.
