Former President Goodluck Jonathan has accused politicians of uttering too much bitterness over the fast-approaching February 25 and March 11 general elections.

The ex-President, spoke yesterday before inaugurating the 1.15-kilometre Afi-Uko Ntighe Bridge in the Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He stated that the use of such negative expressions among politicians was threatening the nation’s democracy and stalling development.

Jonathan then urged security agencies to go tough on politicians who hide under politics to cause havoc.

He said:

We have noticed some levels of bitterness that will not bring development in the build-up to the general election.

“The security agencies should not shield any unfortunate miscreant or anybody who commits crime under the guise of politics.

“If you commit arson or any form of violence, you must face the law. Nobody will hide under the cover of election to commit crime.”

Jonathan lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for completing the long pending bridge.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, his predecessor, started the project in 2014.

Emmanuel speaking revealed that the completion of the bridge was in fulfilment of his second-term campaign promise and a major component of his Completion Agenda.

The governor stated that the bridge would create access to the economic hub of the state, such as the Ibom Industrial City, the Liberty Free Trade Zone, among others.
