Abuja— The Enyo filling station
in Wuse Zone 1 has been rocked with an explosion.

An eyewitness Mr Jide Babalola, the incident began around 7: 05 pm on Friday and last for almost an hour.

He added that no single fatal incident was recorded but many residents still felt some measure of panic.

However, it was gathered no could confirmed what caused the inferno only that a tanker parked in the filling station started burning.

He said residents initially thought it was a bomb explosion

Speaking on the destruction of properties Babalola said several cars were caught up in the fire and burnt.

He however said the good nature and quick thinking of many Nigerians shone through the gloom as youths gathered round several cars, broke window glasses and shifted the gears of cars that were speedily pushed out of harm’s way.

It was confirmed that the Fire Service had been contacted immediately but it seemed that the intensity of the inferno was beyond their capability and equipment.

Another resident in the area, Mr Adamson Akinpelu, a businessman confirmed the incident to The Nation Newspaper.

Akinpelu said:
“The series of explosions that commenced following the fire incident caused many residents in the Zone 1 neighbourhood to flee from their homes in panic.

“When we started hearing one explosion after the other, with the fire getting serious across the horizon, we thought that dome nasty terrorists were here.”

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Public Relations Officer, Fire Service, Ibrahim Mohammed Tauheed, who was on ground at the scene of the inferno told The Nation that people were on a rampage but the situation has been brought under control with the efforts of the firefighters and the police.

He said people initially drove the firefighters preventing them from doing their job.

He said no one could say what really caused the fire but fortunately, no life was lost.
