The riot, according to an eyewitness, was caused by the commercial banks’ refusal to accept the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes.

Also, a fuel station in the area was torched for rejecting the old notes from residents.

Videos monitored by our correspondent show the protesters blocking a section of the road before setting fire to the Automated Teller Machines in the banks.

A resident told our correspondent that “the banks refuse to collect old naira notes from the transporters and it caused a fight back from them.”

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe did not respond to calls put through to his phone as of press time.
