Protest in the early hours of Friday broke out in the Diobu and Mile 1 areas of Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The Punch reported that banks were set ablaze by the protesters.

The protest was attributed to the prevalent scarcity of the new naira notes that has continued to frustrate Nigerians and businesses.

The protesters attempted to force traders to collect the old naira notes against their wish.

Hoodlums take over protest

Meanwhile, scores of hoodlums of took advantage of the protest to rob traders in the Mile 3 and Mile 1 markets forcing traders to accept the old notes or risk their goods.

Many traders locked their shops and fled, while residents were robbed by the hoodlums.

Casualties recorded in Lagos protest

In a similar development, an unspecified number of casualties have been recorded in gunfire and mayhem across Lagos state on Friday morning.

This is coming amid All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu’s opposition to President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to obey the Supreme Court’s order to allow old naira notes to be used as legal tender concurrently with the new notes.

Findings revealed that chaos erupted at Mile 12, Iyana Iba, Ikorodu, and Agege, with commuters left stranded at bus stops and highways.

There was reported pandemonium in Mile 12 market, along Ikorodu road, on Friday as traders allegedly insisted on new naira notes before they could transact business in the market.

Gunfire was also reported at Ketu and Ojo, as a video seen online showed commuters scampering for safety after shots were fired.

Witnesses claimed that scarcity of the new naira notes and its attendant economic hardship was the major cause of the violence across the state on Friday.
