Abba Kyari Rejects Prison Food After Remand

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has reportedly rejected food served him at the Kuje Correctional Centre, following his transfer to the facility on Monday.

The former Intelligence Response Team boss has instead, opted for only meals prepared by his wife and other family members.

While Kyari and his co-defendants are gradually settling down in custody, the embattled super cop is said to be mostly reserved and keeping to himself since his arrival at the facility.

Reacting to Kyari’s decision to reject food served him, Francis Enobore, the NCoS spokesman said prisoners undergoing prosecution had the right to eat meals prepared by family members.

Enobore noted that such victims were also free to provide food for themselves.

He however, revealed that alcoholic drinks and hard drugs were a serious offense at the facility, adding that about twelve officers are already facing trial for trafficking illegal items into the centre.

“Our law allows us to request any inmate who wishes to do self-feeding to apply through a formal application to the officer in-charge of the custodial centre. Subject to the approval of the official in-charge, the applicant will make arrangements with whoever he wishes to bring food for him.”

“The caveat is that if the person fails to bring food, he would not be fed from the service’s kitchen. Again, whoever is bringing his food; it is compulsory the person tastes the food in the presence of the officer conducting the visit to ensure that the food is wholesome before passing it over to the inmate.”

“No alcoholic drink or cigarette is allowed in the facility. Wherever you found them in the yard, they are a product of trafficking and we deal seriously with such issues.

“There is a long list before me now of officers to be dismissed for trafficking. Five will be dismissed while seven others will be reduced in rank,” he said.

Daily Report Nigeria recalls that the once celebrated super cop was remanded at the Kuje Prison on Monday by trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwike.

Kyari is facing trial alongside four other police officers, who were denied bail by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal capital Territory.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in its charge accused Kyari and accomplices of conspiracy, obstruction and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55kg.

Justice Emeka Nwike, ordered the NDLEA to transfer the Abba Kyari and other defendants to prison custody, after denying them bail.

The court said the NDLEA had presented sufficient proof before it to warrant the bail refusal of Kyari and his co-defendants – Sunday Ubia, Simon Agirgba, and John Nuhu, who are all former members of the defunct IRT.
