After nearly two years in custody, Abba Kyari, a suspended police chief, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja.

Kyari’s arrest in February 2022 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was related to suspected involvement with a global drug network.

He was charged alongside four colleagues and two convicted drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne.

Although Kyari maintained his innocence, his repeated bail requests were denied until a recent court ruling.

On May 22, 2024, Judge Emeka Nwite granted Kyari temporary bail to attend his mother’s funeral, subject to surrendering his passport and regular check-ins at the NDLEA office.

Following a hearing on May 31, Kyari was released on Friday evening after meeting his bail conditions.
