An abducted Kwara monarch, the Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Kamilu Salami, has finally regained his freedom after spending 25 days in captivity, following the payment of a huge ransom by members of his community.

As news of his release spread, hundreds of villagers reportedly trooped to the palace, singing and dancing in relief as they welcomed their monarch back home.

Confirming the development, community spokesperson Ayinla Lawal said the ruler was released after the ransom was paid in two installments, solely through community contributions.

“I’m happy to inform you that our monarch has been released. He was freed on Tuesday night,” Lawal said.

He explained that the amount paid was deliberately withheld at the request of community elders.

“Our elders pleaded that we should not disclose the amount, but it was huge. The local and state governments did not assist us throughout this ordeal. Only members of the community raised the money,” he added.

Lawal noted that financial difficulty was the major reason negotiations dragged on for weeks.

“It was really tough for us, and that is why it took time. Above all, we thank Almighty God that Kabiesi returned alive.”

The monarch’s younger brother, Aliyu, also confirmed the release, revealing that he personally handled communications with the kidnappers and escorted the monarch to a private hospital in Ilorin.

“I was scared at a point because of the risk, but the community encouraged me. They move around constantly, and you can’t even identify them. Thank God I wasn’t detained, and my brother is back alive,” Aliyu said.

Attempts to speak directly with the monarch were unsuccessful, as he was said to be resting under medical supervision.
