Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has ordered the immediate closure of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, following violent protests by students of the institution.
The decision came after unrest broke out on Tuesday when students protested a three-week break declared by the management to allow the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp to hold on the campus.

Management of the polytechnic confirmed that several students and staff members, including the institution’s Chief Security Officer, sustained injuries during the protest.
The state government had relocated the NYSC orientation camp to the polytechnic due to security concerns at the permanent camp in Yinkpata. Following the relocation, students were directed to proceed on holiday to ensure a smooth orientation exercise.
However, students protested the directive, citing their recent return from the Christmas and New Year break. The situation escalated, prompting the intervention of police operatives.
In a statement, the Acting Registrar of the polytechnic, AbdulHafis Amin, blamed security operatives for poor handling of the situation, alleging that tear gas canisters were fired into student hostels and other areas of the campus.
According to the statement, the action worsened the crisis and endangered lives, leading the governor to order the closure of the institution to protect lives and property.
The management called on students, staff, and stakeholders to remain calm as efforts continue to resolve the situation amicably.
