The Abia State Government has announced a major breakthrough in electricity supply, revealing that the state is no longer affected by frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid. The governor said this became possible after the state began converting organic waste into electricity through renewable energy solutions.

Speaking to journalists at the Government House in Umuahia on Thursday, the governor explained that his administration is investing heavily in clean energy by transforming waste products into biogas-powered electricity.

According to him, the initiative has helped Abia reduce its dependence on the national grid, which has suffered repeated system failures across the country.

He disclosed that the state has also taken over electricity regulation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority.

“Instead of throwing away waste, we can turn it into clean energy. This project will help power many areas, especially the Umuahia farm settlements,” the governor said.

The governor further revealed that discussions with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) have been successful, adding that the utility company has accepted the state’s proposal.

“Our offers to EEDC have been accepted, and we are currently working on raising funds to pay off EEDC,” he stated.

He also confirmed that the transition became official on December 24, when the state formally assumed control of electricity generation, distribution, and transmission within Abia.

“Everything about electricity in Abia; generation, distribution, and transmission, will now be regulated within the state,” the governor added.

The project is currently running as a pilot scheme, with plans to expand it across more parts of the state in the coming months.
