  • The ADC said APC defections won’t save the ruling party from defeat in the 2027 elections.
  • The party called for amendments to the 1999 Constitution and 2022 Electoral Act to ensure credible polls.
  • ADC leaders condemned threats by the Lagos NURTW chairman against party members.
  • The APC held a mega rally in Kaduna celebrating recent defections from opposition parties.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted strongly to comments made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, who claimed that key ADC members would soon join the ruling party. The ADC insisted that such defections would not rescue the APC from the widespread rejection it faces among Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement released by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the APC’s growing desperation for new members clearly shows that it is losing popularity across the country. Abdullahi described the ruling party as “the most hated in Nigeria” due to the hardship it has caused citizens through poor governance and failed promises.

“The declaration by the APC chairman shows that even with governors and senators defecting to their party, the APC knows it cannot be saved. Nigerians are tired of the suffering the ruling party has brought upon them,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC also called for immediate amendments to the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act. According to the party, these reforms are necessary to guarantee free and fair elections and strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary.

In Lagos, the ADC’s state chairmen, led by Ugochukwu Anaere, expressed concern over rising political intimidation and threats against ADC members. They condemned comments allegedly made by the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle (Sego), describing them as “barbaric and provocative.”

The party leaders said their members were attacked and harassed during the 2023 elections and warned that such violence must not be repeated in 2027. They called on security agencies to arrest Adekunle and ensure the safety of all voters during future elections.

Meanwhile, the APC celebrated a series of defections at a mega rally in Kaduna over the weekend. Governor Uba Sani announced that the APC now controls 95% of the political space in the state, following the defection of four state assembly members, five federal lawmakers, and thousands of supporters.

Governor Sani assured new members of equal opportunities within the party, saying the APC “is one family that does not discriminate.” At the event, Dr. Yilwatda described the APC as “the promised land” for Nigerian politicians and praised President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sani for their achievements.

The rally, held at Murtala Square in Kaduna, was attended by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal; and other top APC figures.
