The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent comment describing politics as a “game” while responding to concerns about the Electoral Act amendment.

The criticism followed the President’s remark during an Iftar meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), where he reportedly told opposition parties to meet him at the polls, adding that “the game is sweet only when you are winning.”

Reacting in a statement on Thursday, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the comment as inappropriate and cynical, saying it reduces governance to a mere political contest.

The party said the remark raises concerns about the President’s commitment to democratic principles, especially at a time when the country is facing economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and rising poverty.

According to the ADC, democracy should not be treated as a competition but as a system built on accountability, respect for institutions and responsibility to citizens.

The party further alleged that the amended Electoral Act was designed to weaken opposition parties and tilt the political playing field in favour of the ruling government.

It also argued that while the administration may claim political victories, many Nigerians continue to struggle with security challenges, unemployment and the rising cost of living.

The ADC added that governance should not be trivialised, stressing that leadership requires seriousness, competence and respect for the rule of law.
