The attack comes barely two days after unidentified gunmen invaded the home of the Governor Hope Uzodinma in Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area of the state.

Part of the Governor’s house razed alongside some vehicles in the compound, while a security official was also killed in the process.

According to the Commissioner of Information in the state, Declan Emelumba, the attack was repelled by a combined team of security operatives attached to the house.

Some eyewitnesses had suggested the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) may have carried out the attack, but the outlawed group denied the claims.

On April 5, 2021, gunmen invaded the headquarters of the Imo State Police Command and the Nigerian Correctional Service in Owerri, burning the facilities and freed over 1,800 inmates.
