The Rivers State House of Assembly has again commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of gross misconduct.

The lawmakers initiated the process during plenary on Thursday, marking the second attempt to remove the governor within a span of 10 months.

A similar impeachment move in 2025 was halted after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending the governor, his deputy and all members of the Assembly in March over a prolonged political crisis.

At the time, analysts believed the federal intervention stalled the impeachment plot against Fubara, who was locked in a bitter political feud with his former ally and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Since then, Fubara has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Wike remains in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though he is reportedly leading a broad political coalition in Rivers State in support of Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
