  • Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared during plenary that he never intended to step down over recent sexual harassment allegations, describing them as false and baseless.

  • Senate Majority Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio, stressing that accusations against lawmakers must always be backed by evidence.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said he never entertained the idea of stepping down from his position due to the recent sexual harassment allegations against him, which he dismissed as false.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate during Thursday’s plenary, Akpabio responded to Senate Majority Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who had earlier passed a vote of confidence in his leadership.

Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, said, “By now I’m sure you know, sir, that those who felt that by now, this Senate would have asked you to step down would have seen now that we are focused on what we are doing… we will always ask for evidence, and we will do what is in overriding public interest.”

In response, Akpabio said: “You said, ‘those who would have asked you to step down’, who told you I was going to step down due to false allegations? If you watch the record in America, there are black people because of their skin, who went to prison…some 25 years for false allegations. So, I’m not one of those people. They will step down for false allegation and when it’s proven that the allegations are false, they say, ‘Oh, we were unfair to Akpabio.’ So, if you have that in mind, please cancel it.”

The development comes amid continued tension over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who posted a sarcastic apology to Akpabio on her Facebook page, claiming she was punished for “maintaining dignity and self-respect.”

Akpabio is currently asking an Abuja Federal High Court to compel her to delete the statement.
