  • Akpoti responds boldly: “See you in court.”

Nigeria was jolted into heated debate on Friday as Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio initiated a massive ₦200 billion defamation suit against fellow lawmaker Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Court filings suggest Akpabio believes her public interviews, aired across multiple media platforms and shared widely online were deliberately crafted to portray him as a sexual predator.

His lawyers described the interviews as a coordinated personal attack, claiming that the allegations subjected the Senate President to national embarrassment, reputational damage, and public ridicule. Akpabio is requesting sweeping reliefs: deletion of every online publication carrying the claims, public apologies broadcast repeatedly across TV, radio, and digital channels, and financial compensation amounting to ₦200bn.

The case is now formally active after the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory approved substituted service through the National Assembly Clerk on November 6, 2025, following unsuccessful attempts to serve Akpoti directly.

Reacting to the development, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan acknowledged receiving the suit and welcomed the confrontation rather than shrinking from it. She noted that she had previously attempted to tender her complaint before the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, but was blocked on the grounds that a related matter was in court, a move she believes protected Akpabio from scrutiny within the chamber.

“I’m ready to prove everything,” she said in a firm statement.

She added that she would demonstrate that she was sexually harassed and punished politically for refusing advances.

Her closing words were sharp: “See you in court, Godswill Akpabio.”

With both sides assembling documents, witnesses, and digital records, this case is now poised to become one of Nigeria’s most high-profile legal battles, one that could reshape how sexual harassment allegations are treated within high political office.

All eyes now turn to the FCT High Court as proceedings begin.
