US online retail giant Amazon announced on Tuesday that it will eliminate 14,000 jobs worldwide as part of an effort to streamline operations and accelerate investment in artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement signed by Senior Vice-President Beth Galetti, Amazon described the reductions as a continuation of initiatives to reduce bureaucracy, remove organisational layers, and reallocate resources toward areas critical to customer needs.

“While this will include reducing in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles,” Galetti said. She added that AI is “the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet,” enabling faster innovation across the company.

Media reports indicate that the wider plan could see 30,000 job cuts globally over several months, affecting departments such as human resources, advertising, and management, within a corporate workforce of 350,000 office positions out of over 1.5 million total employees.

Looking ahead, Galetti affirmed that Amazon will continue hiring in key strategic areas in 2026 while seeking further efficiency gains.
