• Says irregularities have eroded public confidence in democracy

The African Action Congress (AAC) has rejected the outcome of the Anambra State governorship election, alleging that the poll was marred by irregularities, vote buying, and violations of electoral procedures.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Campaign Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chimezie Nwokeanochie, the party claimed that credible reports from its agents and independent observers across the state showed that the election failed to meet democratic standards.

“Our observations and credible reports from party agents and independent monitors indicate that the process was marred by widespread irregularities and violations of established electoral procedures,” Nwokeanochie said.

He added that such breaches “compromised the secrecy of the ballot and undermined the integrity of the vote.”

The AAC’s governorship candidate, Chioma Ifemeludike, also criticised the conduct of the election, accusing political actors of widespread vote buying that influenced the results.

The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to launch a transparent investigation into the alleged irregularities and ensure that future elections in the state uphold fairness and credibility.

“The anomalies witnessed during this exercise fall short of democratic standards and have eroded public confidence in the process,” the AAC added.

INEC had declared Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of the election, with 422,664 votes, defeating Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 99,445 votes, and Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) who polled 37,753 votes.
