Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to training weeks after a tragic car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of two of his closest associates and left the boxer hospitalised.

Anthony Joshua has taken his first visible steps back toward normal life after surviving a devastating road accident that occurred on December 29, killing his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and long-time trainer Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

The 36-year-old boxer shared a short Snapchat montage showing himself gradually returning to physical activity, including pad work, swimming, and cycling on an exercise bike.

He captioned one of the clips “mental strength therapy,” a phrase many fans interpreted as a reflection of his emotional and psychological recovery following the tragedy.

Other posts included a photo of a cardio machine display with the words “I am a fighter,” as well as a throwback image from his iconic 2017 heavyweight title fight against Wladimir Klitschko, where he was caught mid-punch.

Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, had been on holiday in Nigeria after defeating Jake Paul in Miami, just 10 days before the fatal crash.

Investigations revealed that the driver, Adeniyi Kayode (47), did not have a valid driver’s licence at the time of the accident. The crash led to Joshua’s hospitalisation and the filing of criminal charges against Kayode.

At a recent court appearance, Kayode pleaded not guilty to charges including dangerous driving, claiming the vehicle’s brakes failed. He was granted bail but remanded briefly at the Sagamu Correctional Centre for documentation.

Speaking on behalf of the driver, lawyer Olalekan Abiodun said: “My client has pleaded not guilty and what happened was an accident. He is saying the brakes did not work,” Abiodun told the Daily Mail.

He also explained that Joshua initially sat in the front passenger seat before being asked to move.

“Anthony is a big fellow, and the driver said he couldn’t see the wing mirror properly. That was why he asked him to swap seats,” he added.

The case remains ongoing as Joshua continues his recovery, both physically and mentally.
