Peter Obi has raised fresh concerns over the state of Nigeria, insisting that the country has reached a point where happiness is impossible amid deepening poverty, insecurity, and constant loss of lives.

Speaking at a public event in a viral video, the former Anambra State governor said his interest in politics has never been about personal ambition but about fixing a broken system.

“I am not desperate to be president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” Obi said.

According to him, a nation that truly works must work for everyone, not a privileged few.

“Anybody can be president; that is not the issue. Nigeria is not working for anyone today. If it were working, it would be working for everybody,” he stated.

Obi dismissed claims by individuals who say the country is working for them, describing such views as detached from reality.

“Anyone who tells you it is working for him is lying. And anyone who says he is happy in Nigeria today is not a human being but an animal,” he said.

He explained that genuine happiness is impossible when people are surrounded by suffering, killings, and daily bad news.

“Nobody is happy when people around you are dying every day. Nobody is happy when you wake up to bad news all the time,” Obi added.

Describing Nigeria’s situation as an existential crisis, Obi said the pain is even deeper for those who have held public office.

“We are suffering in the midst of plenty. Nigeria has no reason to be poor. God gave us everything we need to be great,” he said.

However, he admitted that leadership failure is a major part of the problem.

“God also gave us leaders like me, sometimes incompetent, selfish, and unwilling to work for the people. No politician should be excluded,” Obi said.

He stressed that his comments were based on firsthand experience.

“I have served. I know what I am talking about. This country has been turned into a crime scene,” he concluded.

Obi’s remarks come amid growing national frustration over banditry, kidnappings, rising living costs, and economic hardship, with recent data showing that over 60 percent of Nigerians live in poverty.
