The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has lost about 1,331 members of his party to the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in his hometown of Kano.
Daily Report Nigeria reports that the defection occurred on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
The defectors, primarily from 11 wards in Ganduje’s Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area, have pledged to oppose the APC’s return to power in the state.
Among the notable former APC leaders who have now joined the NNPP are Malam Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, the former Vice Chairman of the local government; Audu Magaji Tumfafi, a former state House of Assembly aspirant; and Bashir Musa Sani, the APC Youth Leader for Takai Organisation.

Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, one of the defectors’ leaders, cited Ganduje’s failure to develop the local government during his eight-year tenure as the primary reason for their departure.
Dungurawa asserted that under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP is dedicated to promoting socio-economic and infrastructural development in Kano.
He assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party and dismissed rumours of a mass defection of NNPP members to the APC.
Dungurawa maintained that the NNPP remains firmly in control of its party structure across the political wards, describing those aligning with the APC as opportunists seeking personal gain.
