Appeal Court Sacks YPP Rep Member, Orders Rerun

The Appeal Court in Abuja, has voided the election of Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo as member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the House of Representatives.

Daily Report recalls that the Ukpong-Udo was declared House member representing the constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following a supplementary election on February 25, 2023.

The victory of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate was, however, challenged by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Glory Edet.

Udong-Udo was subsequently sacked by the Akwa Ibom State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which ordered a rerun for the seat.

Unsatisfied, the YPP candidate candidate had approached the Appeal Court, seeking the appellate court to set aside the ruling of the tribunal.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, a panel of the Court led by Justice Abba Mohammed upheld the tribunal’s verdict, ordering a rerun.

It is, however, unclear if the rerun was ordered in the entire federal constituency or in the polling units where INEC had declared the results as inconclusive.
