Tragedy struck the Ebonyi State Police Command on Wednesday as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, collapsed and died while attending a management meeting at the command headquarters in Abakaliki.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. inside the office of the Commissioner of Police, where senior officers were holding a routine management meeting.

ACP Popoola, who was in charge of the State Intelligence Department (SID), reportedly slumped during the meeting after suddenly developing breathing difficulties.

He was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the state police headquarters, where medical personnel made frantic efforts to revive him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Preliminary medical findings indicated that the senior officer likely died from cardiac arrest associated with hypertensive heart disease, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The remains of the deceased officer have since been deposited at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA 1) mortuary in Abakaliki.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the ACP experienced a sudden medical emergency during the meeting.

“We were in a meeting when the ACP suddenly developed breathing difficulties. He was quickly taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive,” Ukandu said.

The police spokesperson added that the late officer was not known to have been ill before the incident.

“He had no known health issues. If he was unwell, he wouldn’t have attended the meeting,” he added.

The death has revived concerns about health and welfare conditions within the Nigeria Police Force, especially following a similar incident in June 2025, when Deputy Commissioner of Police Abubakar Muhammad Guri collapsed and died at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
