ASUU urges members to unite as frustration over eight-year negotiation deepens.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has commenced full mobilisation of its members across campuses nationwide in preparation for a nationwide strike expected to begin next week.
The union said its decision followed the Federal Government’s silence after a 14-day ultimatum was issued to address unresolved issues in the renegotiated 2025 agreement.

In a letter signed by the ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, and dated October 5, 2025, the union accused the government of deliberately frustrating dialogue despite repeated appeals and formal communications.
> “The National Executive Council (NEC) of our Union, at its emergency meeting of 29th September, 2025, having evaluated the results of the referendum held across our branches, resolved to give government a fourteen-day ultimatum to resolve the issues contained in the negotiated document which has been transmitted to government since February, 2025,” the letter stated.
Piwuna explained that the notice, which commenced on September 28, would culminate in a two-week warning strike if the government fails to act.
“It is now one week since those resolutions were communicated to the appropriate authorities. I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be reported,” he added.
The union leader further urged members across branches to mobilise fully and remain steadfast, describing the struggle as one aimed at safeguarding the dignity and competitiveness of Nigeria’s university system.
“The goal of our current action remains principally to compel Government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement document, amongst other demands. The days ahead call for mobilisation of every member of our union to ensure unity of purpose,” Piwuna wrote.

He also warned members to take instructions only from recognised ASUU officials, including branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, to maintain internal discipline during the industrial action.
ASUU’s demands include full implementation of the renegotiated 2025 agreement, improved funding for public universities, and the restoration of earned allowances.
The union has consistently accused successive governments of breaching previous agreements, leading to recurring industrial crises in the education sector.
