Committee set up by FG yet to report
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve longstanding grievances in the university system.
The directive follows a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja, where the union expressed frustration over the government’s alleged neglect of the sector.

ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, signed a copy of the strike notice made available to reporters in Abuja, warning:“If at the end of the fourteen-day ultimatum the Federal Government fails to address these issues, the Union may have no option but to first embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter a total and indefinite strike.”
The union’s core demands remain largely unchanged, including:
Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU agreement
Adequate revitalisation funds for public universities
Settlement of outstanding salary arrears
Sustainable funding mechanisms for higher education
The Federal Government had previously established a committee, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, to review proposals from ASUU aimed at stabilising universities.
As of the time of filing, the committee has yet to release its findings or recommendations to the public.
