The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a nationwide strike if their demands are not met.

ASUU made the decision during the union’s national executive council meeting held at the University of Ibadan over the weekend.

Although the union has not publicly disclosed its position, a senior member revealed that the lecturers agreed to give the government a 21-day notice before embarking on industrial action.

It also demanded the removal of ASUU from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform, payment of withheld salaries, and addressing the backlog of earning academic allowances.

The union’s chairman, Melemi Abatcha, had revealed the issues plaguing the educational sector, including university autonomy, the proliferation of public universities, and the withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries of ASUU members.

Despite the Minister of Education’s invitation for a meeting to deliberate on the issues, ASUU members claimed that nothing substantial has been done to address their demands.
