Federal government’s welfare-driven loan scheme intended to boost staff financial security faces strong resistance
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the federal government’s Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund and announced plans for nationwide protests, following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, on August 16–17, 2025.
In a statement signed by Prof. Christopher Piwuna, ASUU president, the union condemned being listed as a guarantor for loans it had no involvement in and demanded to be delisted from the scheme.
The union described the plan as a “ploy” and accused the government of failing to address long-standing challenges in the university system.

ASUU pledged to respond with simultaneous protests and press briefings across all branches on dates yet to be announced, signalling escalating tension with the Ministry of Education.
The federal government had earlier introduced the welfare-focused loan scheme to boost financial security and career growth for academic and non-academic staff in tertiary institutions.
