Move sparks tension within opposition ranks
Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the party.
Atiku’s shocking exit comes amid ongoing talks to form a political coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a brief statement released on Wednesday, Atiku clarified that while he is leaving the PDP, he remains committed to uniting opposition forces to wrest power from APC.

“I’m not leaving politics. This is a strategic move. A broad-based coalition is inevitable if Nigeria must be rescued from the grip of APC,” the former vice president declared.

The development has already triggered ripples within the PDP, with senior stakeholders warning that Atiku’s departure could weaken the party’s base and hand APC an easy ride in the next polls.
Political analysts say the former vice president’s move could pave the way for a “mega opposition party” that includes figures from PDP, Labour Party, ADC, and other smaller parties.
