Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a high-profile visit to Taraba State, declaring the party as the political platform capable of rescuing Nigeria from economic hardship, insecurity and leadership failure ahead of the 2027 elections.

When Atiku Abubakar arrived in Jalingo on Tuesday, the atmosphere was far from an ordinary party gathering. The former Vice President commissioned the new ADC State Secretariat, but the event quickly took on a deeper political meaning, one signalling a shift in his long political journey.

Supporters from Adamawa, Kano, and Bauchi filled the venue, many convinced that Atiku was opening a fresh chapter outside the familiar political terrain of the Peoples Democratic Party. Though he did not openly renounce the PDP, his message left little doubt about his new direction.

Atiku told the crowd that Nigeria needed a new political rescue platform after years of failure by the ruling APC.

“It is unfortunate that the present government deceived you and plunged the country into lack of peace, hunger, poverty, and joblessness,” he said.

He accused the APC administration of worsening inflation, insecurity, and poverty, describing the ADC as a vehicle capable of delivering national redemption.

Atiku also used the visit to caution voters about the importance of preparation ahead of 2027.

“Without your voter cards, your determination to change leadership in 2027 will be in vain,” he warned.

Taraba ADC chairman, Hassan Adamu, pledged the party’s full support for Atiku’s vision and assured him that the state would be handed over to the ADC in the next general election.

“In 2027, a new government will be formed, and we will deliver Taraba to ADC and Atiku,” Adamu declared.

During the visit, the party inaugurated its State Transition Committee, led by Senator Abubakar Tutare and Barrister Haruna Kwetishe, another move that points to a party strengthening its internal structures ahead of the race for 2027.

Whether Atiku’s new direction is a permanent switch or a strategic alliance remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: with growing frustration over insecurity, inflation and hardship, Nigerians are increasingly looking for an alternative.

For now, Jalingo has become the backdrop for Atiku’s next political chapter, one where he attempts to position himself, not just as a veteran politician, but as the face of a new national rescue mission.
