Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently met with Nigerian chess master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya.
The meeting highlighted Onakoya’s impressive work using chess to transform the lives of children in underprivileged communities.
Onakoya gained international recognition in April when Guinness World Records honored him for playing chess continuously for 64 hours alongside American player Shawn Martinez at New York City’s Times Square.

Sharing photos from their meeting on X, Atiku praised Onakoya’s decade-long dedication to empowering slum children through chess. He emphasized how the game has helped many of these children gain admission to local and international schools by fostering critical thinking and opening new opportunities.
During their conversation, Onakoya passionately shared his vision to create the world’s largest chess institute, underscoring his belief that “Talent is universal, but opportunity is not.” Atiku expressed his commitment to supporting Onakoya’s initiatives to bring this vision to life.
Atiku also admired a chessboard gifted to him by Onakoya, decorated with traditional ‘Adire’ patterns, calling it a “work of art.” The chess master also extended an invitation to Atiku for his upcoming birthday celebration later this year.
