Atiku, Obi Dismiss 2027 Running Mate Rumours, Say No Power-Sharing Deal Yet

• Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have both denied reaching a power-sharing deal for the 2027 elections, rejecting media reports of a running mate arrangement.

• Obi dismissed the rumours as selfish politics, while Atiku said coalition talks are still exploratory and focused on building an alternative platform.

Presidential candidates from the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), have denied entering any power-sharing agreement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

There were recent media claims that Atiku offered Obi the vice-presidential slot on a joint ticket and promised to serve only one term.

However, Obi strongly dismissed the report during a public engagement on Monday, stating, “This is selfish politics that undermines national progress.” He reaffirmed his commitment to good governance and public service, not political positions.

Obi, who visited the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa and donated N20 million to its hospital and school, reiterated that his focus remains on national issues. “What we should be discussing is how to educate our children,” he added.

Meanwhile, Atiku, through his media aide Paul Ibe, clarified that the coalition initiative is still in the exploratory phase. “If we are already discussing positions, it’s like putting the cart before the horse. The process is ongoing and focused on building a viable alternative platform,” Ibe said.

Support groups backing Obi also denied the speculation. “There has been no discussion or agreement of this nature,” said Dr Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. Director of Media, Hajiya Nana Kazaure, added, “Our politics must be people-centred. Mr Obi has not agreed to any such alliance and remains committed to the Labour Party.”

They called on the media to avoid spreading false narratives and instead focus on issues affecting Nigerians.
