Key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Peter Ahmeh, have called for comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
They argue that such reforms are critical for ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process.
Atiku Abubakar, through his media aide, Paul Ibe, emphasised that the integrity of elections must be prioritised, specifically calling for secure electronic transmission of results to prevent manipulation.
Atiku further explained, “It’s all part of the process. The rules of engagement need to be up to speed. They must reflect best practices. Even the administration recognizes that there are shortcomings with the electoral law and that it needs to be amended.”
He added that leaders from various political groups had already submitted memorandums for constitutional amendments, underscoring the need for reforms that would guarantee the integrity of votes.

Peter Obi, represented by Tanko Yunusa, reiterated the demand for reforms to improve the fairness of elections, with a focus on reducing political defections.
“We want an electoral system where the result of every election at every polling unit will be electronically transmitted with no easy way for manipulation,” said Obi.
Peter Ahmeh of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) also called for elections to be held on a single day, citing voter fatigue and logistical inefficiencies as reasons for this suggestion.
