Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that no aspirant will step aside ahead of the party’s flagbearer selection.

The 2023 PDP presidential candidate made the statement on Tuesday via his media adviser, Paul Ibe, amid speculation that he might yield to a southern candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He further accused forces aligned with the presidency of attempting to destabilize the ADC, describing any call for him to step aside as a threat to democracy.

“The ADC is on a national rescue mission. I, alongside other committed patriots, am central to this effort. Any overt or covert call for me to step aside is a gift to authoritarian ambition,” the statement said.

Atiku emphasised that the ADC remains committed to an open, transparent, and competitive process, welcoming all genuine opposition figures.

He criticized the Tinubu administration for weakening opposition parties, leaving the APC dominant not by merit, but by default.

The ADC was adopted in July 2025 as a coalition platform by top opposition figures—including Atiku, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi—to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
