Benin Republic was thrown into uncertainty on Sunday after a group of soldiers appeared on national television and announced what they described as a takeover of government power. The soldiers, who identified themselves as members of the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), stated that they had collectively resolved that “Mr Patrice Talon is removed from office as President of the Republic.”

The broadcast, which lasted only a few minutes, immediately drew national and international attention, marking what appears to be a bold attempt to unseat a leader whose administration has lasted nearly a decade.

President Talon, who is expected to step down in April, has not been seen since the broadcast. His location remains unknown, fueling concern across Cotonou and beyond. While there has been no official response from the presidency at the time of filing this report, tension in the capital continues to rise.

Shortly after the announcement, the French Embassy issued a security advisory on X, confirming reports of gunfire around Camp Guezo, not far from the President’s official residence. “Gunfire was reported at Camp Guezo,” the embassy wrote, urging French nationals to stay indoors until further notice.

Public movement has reportedly slowed in key government districts as residents await clarity on the developing situation. Whether the coup attempt has gained structure or resistance remains uncertain, but the broadcast alone signals a turning point in Benin’s political landscape.

Regional observers worry the event may inflame political division if not contained swiftly. For now, the nation, once considered one of West Africa’s more stable democracies is watching closely to see what happens within the next 48 hours.
