Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, says the opposition party will reclaim the presidency in 2027, despite the wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Governor Mohammed admitted that the spate of defections among PDP governors and lawmakers was worrisome but insisted that the party was quietly working to rebuild internal unity and restore public confidence.

“If you ask me whether I’m concerned about our governors leaving for APC, I am more than concerned. But leadership is a burden. A lot of work is being done behind the scenes,” he said.

Accuses APC of Weaponising Power

The Bauchi governor accused the APC-led Federal Government of using coercive tactics to weaken the opposition, alleging an attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

“You know the style of leadership of the APC-led government, they have the power of coercion, they have the power of everything,” he said.

Despite the pressure, he maintained that most Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots level, remained solidly behind the PDP, noting that those who defected were facing political resistance from their local supporters.

“Even those who left are not finding it easy because most people at the grassroots are PDP. Sometimes these defections are about permutations, but I assure you I’m not going anywhere,” he added.

Party Structure Remains Strong

Governor Mohammed acknowledged that more defections  including from lawmakers in his state  could occur, but insisted that Bauchi State remains a PDP stronghold.

“Even today, I saw in the news that one of my senators is going. They are being controlled and bought, but certainly, the state is PDP,” he said, expressing optimism that Nigerians would seek change through the PDP in the next general election.

He also dismissed concerns that internal litigations could derail the upcoming PDP convention, assuring that the party leadership was addressing all court-related distractions.

“Many of these litigations are artificially created to undermine us. But we don’t have any faction in the PDP,” he said.

PDP Ready for National Renewal

Governor Mohammed emphasised that the PDP remains the most credible platform for national development, recalling that the party laid the foundation for most of Nigeria’s measurable achievements in governance and economic reform.

“Most of the achievements by the federal government were done by PDP regimes. By God’s grace, if we stand firm, we will deliver,” he stated.

He further assured that the PDP Governors’ Forum had resolved to prioritise unity and merit in selecting candidates ahead of 2027, while remaining open to big political figures such as former President Goodluck Jonathan who might wish to rejoin or associate with the party.

“People are still interested in this party. These big names make us happy. We are united and will come up with leadership that will be the best choice for Nigerians to put in Aso Rock, insha’Allah,” he said.
