The current Ballon d’Or Féminin laureate, a two-time winner of the prestigious award, did not appear in Spain’s 3-1 victory against Japan in a final friendly before the European Championship.
The 27-year-old midfielder uploaded a picture of herself watching the game from her hospital bed after skipping Thursday’s practice due to illness.
After testing revealed that Bonmati was unwell, the RFEF states that she is “under ongoing medical observation.”
Given that Bonmati is regarded as a key member of the squad, the revelation has clouded Spain’s tournament preparations.
Following the victory over Japan, Spain’s head coach Montse Tomé spoke about the situation, stating that there is still question over Bonmati’s participation in the forthcoming competition.
> “Talking about meningitis can be scary but in theory it is under control,” – said Tome.
“We don’t know how long she’s going to be absent. I can’t say anything more than that.”
“Aitana is an extremely important player, so we’re going to wait for her as long as possible.”
On July 3, Spain will play Portugal in Bern to begin their Euro 2025 campaign.
In Group C, they will also play Italy and Belgium.
La Roja would suffer a serious blow if Bonmati were to miss out, as they are hoping to create history in Switzerland.
