The victim, Mallam Muhammad Bello, was an Assistant Imam at the local Izala Mosque and was widely respected for his role in Islamic teachings and Quranic interpretation, especially during Ramadan.

His brother, Abdullah Birnin Gwari, confirmed the killing and expressed grief over what he described as a senseless loss to the community.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the killing of our senior scholar, Mallam Bello. He was a pillar of Islamic knowledge and peace in this community,” he said.

He lamented the persistent insecurity in the area and urged authorities to act decisively.

“We are calling on the government and security agencies to fear God and take this matter seriously. The lives of our people are not expendable,” Abdullah added.

Local sources also confirmed that seven other residents of Layin Danauta remain in captivity, having been abducted by the same bandit groups operating in the surrounding forests. Families of the abducted victims say they have received no clear updates on rescue efforts.

The killing has heightened tension in Birnin Gwari, a region that has repeatedly suffered attacks linked to banditry, despite ongoing security operations.

Residents continue to appeal for stronger protection, warning that continued inaction could further destabilise the area.
