The leadership of Sangana community in Bayelsa state has threatened to shutdown operations of Consolidated Oil and Gas (Conoil) over the killing of a peaceful protester at the company’s facility.
Daily Report Nigeria reports that one Mr. Ikiowori Benson was shot dead by military personnel attached to the Conoil OML59 off-shore facility during a peaceful protest on Monday.
The victim and others were shot at by security operatives when they approached the facility to demand the implementation of the Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between the company and Sangana, amongst other demands.

The community on Friday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Conoil to meet its demands or face a close down of their operations.
The community also demanded N1b as compensation for the family of the deceased and the immediate implementation of the four consecutive MOUs the community had signed with Conoil in the last 12 years.

According to the people, Conoil is yet to provide medical relief and duly compensate Sangana residents for the November 2021 toxic gas explosion that occurred at Adriatic-1 a contracted rig operating within OML 59.
It also accused Conoil of refusing to recognize the Board of Trustees constituted by the Sangana leadership as provided by the Petroleum Industry Act, thereby denying its benefits as a host community.
They also expressed anger over Conoil’s silence since the brutal attack on the defenceless youths took place on Monday.
