Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from office just days after four lawmakers were suspended for allegedly plotting his removal.

In a handwritten letter dated August 24, 2025, and addressed to the clerk of the Assembly, Dajoh said he was stepping down in good faith and in the best interest of the state. He also assured his constituents that he remained committed to his duties as their representative.

The development followed a tense plenary session last Friday where four members, including Deputy Chief Whip Alfred Berger, were suspended after being accused of mobilising against the Speaker.

The suspension motion, moved by Majority Leader Saater Tiseer and seconded by Elias Audu, was adopted by the house.

Before his resignation, Dajoh had dissolved all committees, appointed Audu as Chairman of the Information Committee, and named new deputy leaders in the Assembly.

His exit marks a major shift in the leadership of the Benue legislature, coming barely a week after lawmakers had passed a vote of confidence on him and Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.
