Boat Mishap Kills 17 Teenagers in Sokoto | Daily Report Nigeria

About seventeen teenagers have reportedly died in a boat mishap that occurred in Sokoto State.

The victims include both boys and girls out of about forty who were on a boat to fetch firewood in a nearby bush.

Daily Report Nigeria gathered that the incident happened in the Dandeji River in Shagari Local Government of the state.

The chairman of the council, Aliyu Dantani said the boat capsized in the early hours of Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Dantani said the deceased have been buried according to Islamic rites after local divers recovered their bodies.

The chairman said:

“About 40 of them ( boys and girls) were in the boat on their way to fetch firewood in a nearby bush when the incident happened as the boat capsized.

“Some of the passengers swam to safety while the search was ongoing when the bodies were recovered.”

A similar a boat mishap occured in 2022 at Gidan Magana that claimed about 29 persons, mostly teenagers.
