The Federal House of Representatives has moved for a bill to ban crossdressing in the country.

Member representing Toro Federal Constituency, Bauchi State, passed first reading on the floor of the House, on Tuesday.

The bill is seeking to ban cross-dressing by Nigerians with the exemption of individuals using it for entertainment.

The bill is coming on the heels of an upsurge of crossdressing among young men in Nigeria, popular among whom are Bobrisky and James Brown.

Offending crossdressers now risk a 6-month jail term if the proposed bill is passed.

The bill also seeks to amend the same-sex marriage prohibition act of 2013 by including cross-dressing as one of the offences under the act.

Same-sex couples and gay persons are at risk of facing up to 14 years in jail if convicted by a court.

“A person engaging in cross-dressing is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment of 6 months or to a fine of five hundred thousand naira.”
