Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have abducted a newly elected local government vice chairman and two councillors in Borno State, heightening security concerns barely days after the conclusion of the state’s local government elections.

The abduction reportedly occurred on Wednesday evening along the Kamuya village–Buni Yadi road, a notorious route linking parts of Borno and Yobe states.

Sources said the officials were travelling in a Hisbah vehicle from Potiskum, Yobe State, heading toward Biu when they were intercepted by armed insurgents suspected to be members of Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

One of the councillors abducted was said to be the immediate past vice chairman of the local government.

A source familiar with the incident confirmed the attack, saying the officials were not alone.

“Yes, our newly elected vice chairman, Alhaji Saidu, and two councillors from Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards were abducted along the Kamuya–Buni Yadi road. They were travelling from Potiskum to Biu in a Hisbah vehicle,” the source said.

The source added that other passengers in the vehicle were also taken during the attack.

“We are appealing to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue them and all other captives safely,” the source pleaded.

Borno State conducted its local government elections on Saturday, December 13, 2025, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 27 local government areas.

The latest abduction has once again raised fears over persistent insecurity in the North-East, especially attacks targeting public office holders.
