Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he feels “perfectly safe” in Nigeria, countering negative security narratives he read before travelling to the country.

Johnson made the remark on Thursday at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri, the state capital.

He told participants that despite warnings about security concerns in Nigeria, he was determined to attend the event.

“When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things saying there may be security problems in Nigeria. But I said I would come anyway,” Johnson said.
“Let me ask you — do you feel safe here today? Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing.”

Johnson also commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for his commitment to delivering 24-hour electricity in Imo State, noting that stable power supply is critical to economic growth.

He added that artificial intelligence (AI) would play a significant role in helping the state achieve its development goals, describing the technology as central to future progress.
