Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz has emerged as a leading contender for the 2024 African Player of the Year award. This notable recognition follows his decision to switch allegiance from Spain to Morocco earlier this year. Diaz will be competing against prominent players such as Ademola Lookman for this prestigious accolade.

Diaz’s journey back to Real Madrid in the 2023-24 season came after a successful loan spell at AC Milan. His previous stint in the Premier League with Manchester City had already established his reputation, but his recent performances have elevated his profile even further. Born to a Moroccan father and a Spanish mother in Spain, Diaz represented Spain up to the U-21 level before making the switch to Morocco.

According to Diario AS, Brahim Diaz is now considered a frontrunner to succeed Victor Osimhen of Nigeria and Napoli as the African Player of the Year. Since changing his national team allegiance, Diaz has played in two friendly matches and two World Cup qualifiers for Morocco, making an immediate impact on the field.

During the last season with Real Madrid, Diaz showcased his talent by scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. His contributions were pivotal in helping Carlo Ancelotti’s team secure the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Supercopa de Espana titles.

One of Brahim Diaz main competitors for the African Player of the Year award is Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman. Lookman made history by becoming the first African player to score a hat-trick in a major European final. He achieved this feat while playing for Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. Additionally, Lookman played a crucial role in leading Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
