  • A commercial minibus driver was killed on Old Ipaja Road after a 40-foot container truck reportedly suffered brake failure and toppled onto the vehicle.
  • LASTMA officials rescued three uninjured passengers and apprehended the truck driver who attempted to flee the scene.
  • The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, urged truck operators to comply with safety protocols, stressing the importance of mechanical inspections.

A tragic road accident claimed the life of a commercial minibus driver in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, en route to Iyana Ipaja, following a collision involving a 40-foot containerised Mack truck.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the fully-loaded truck (registration number MUS 729 XY) suffered brake failure, lost control, and toppled onto the minibus, popularly known as “Korope.”

Part of the statement read: “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deeply regrets to announce a harrowing road traffic incident that transpired in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, enroute to Iyana Ipaja.

“The catastrophic collision involved a fully-laden 40-foot Mack containerised truck (MUS 729 XY), which, reportedly due to catastrophic brake failure, toppled onto a commercial minibus — colloquially referred to as ‘Korope’.

“Tragically, the devastating impact led to the instantaneous death of the minibus driver, whose life was abruptly cut short in the line of duty.”

Taofiq noted that officers of the agency responded promptly to the scene and were able to rescue three passengers — two women and a man — who survived the crash without injuries but were handed over to medical responders.

“In a remarkable display of courage and promptitude, LASTMA Officers deployed along the corridor swiftly mobilised and rescued three passengers — two females and one male — unhurt but were immediately handed over to medical emergency responders for clinical attention,” he added.

The aftermath of the crash disrupted traffic flow across the area, prompting emergency traffic diversion measures.

“The fallen articulated truck obstructed over 50 per cent of the arterial carriageway, precipitating a substantial traffic backlog that rippled across adjoining routes, notably Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA operatives immediately instituted comprehensive traffic diversion and control protocols to alleviate the congestion and maintain orderliness.”

Taofiq also disclosed that the truck driver attempted to flee but was apprehended.

“It is worthy of note that the truck driver, in a failed attempt to abscond from the scene, was apprehended by vigilant LASTMA Officers and promptly transferred to security personnel from both the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions, who had been duly notified by LASTMA officials.”

Emergency units from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force also worked together to secure the site, remove the wreckage, and restore traffic.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and stressed the need for stricter safety compliance among truck drivers.

“Truck operators must adhere strictly to safety protocols. It is non-negotiable that every articulated vehicle undergo thorough mechanical inspection — especially the braking systems — before venturing onto our roads. Preventable tragedies like this underscore the need for unwavering compliance,” Giwa said.

He reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring roadworthiness to prevent future incidents.

The public has been urged to make use of LASTMA’s toll-free hotline — 0800-00-LASTMA (080000527862) — for emergencies or traffic-related assistance.
