The development was announced on Wednesday through a Facebook post by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, confirming the collective exit from the PDP.

While the governor has yet to reveal his next political move, reports indicate that his decision may be connected to deepening internal rifts within the PDP and emerging realignments at the federal level.

In May 2025, SaharaReporters reported that more than 27 political aides of Governor Diri were dismissed for participating in the inauguration of The NEW Associates — a grassroots political movement said to have links to President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Sources at the time described the dismissals as a warning to political loyalists suspected of aligning with rival power blocs outside the PDP’s control.

Governor Diri’s resignation comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Mbah had explained that his defection was driven by a “desire to better serve the people of Enugu” and to align with the APC’s “vision for development and progress.”

He was joined by former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and several state and federal lawmakers.
