“I can confirm that there was a blast in that area, but the incident just happened. I can’t tell you details yet. I will update you later,” Abubakar said during a telephone interview.
Residents of the area alleged that the explosive device may have been planted by bandits, who have continued to carry out violent attacks and disrupt movement across parts of Zamfara State.
A video clip circulating on social media showed travellers fleeing the scene in panic, with vehicles stranded along the highway following the explosion.
Zamfara has remained one of the states most affected by banditry in Nigeria’s North-West, with frequent attacks on highways, villages and rural communities, often resulting in deaths, abductions and destruction of property.
