BREAKING: Court Orders Police to Evict Sanusi II, Restore Bayero as Emir of Kano | Daily Report Nigeria

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has issued an order directing the Police to vacate the Emir’s Palace in Kofar Kudu, Kano, and restore deposed Emir Aminu Bayero to his rightful position.

The court, presided over by Justice S A Amobeda, granted the order on Tuesday in response to an ex-parte motion filed by Bayero.

It also mandated the Police to ensure Bayero’s access to his official residence and all privileges associated with his position as Emir of Kano.

The court’s decision comes amidst a prolonged dispute over the Kano Emirship, which began with the Kano State House of Assembly’s decision to repeal a law creating additional emirates in the state and appointing Bayero as Emir. The move led to the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II, who had been deposed four years prior.

Despite a previous Federal High Court order restraining the Kano State government from enforcing the new Emirate Council Law 2024, Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration ignored the directive.

Bayero returned to Kano on Saturday and took up residence in a mini palace in Nasarawa Local Government Area, while Sanusi II occupied the main palace at Kofar Kudu. The development led to Governor Yusuf ordering Bayero’s arrest, but the Police opted to abide by the earlier court order.

The case, which involves multiple respondents, including the Attorney General of the Federation and the Nigeria Police Force, has been adjourned to June 4, 2024, for further hearing.
