The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has suspended the sale of petrol in naira, a move that has unsettled fuel marketers and heightened concerns about fresh volatility in Nigeria’s downstream sector.

The notice, signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, directed customers with ongoing naira-based transactions to formally apply for refunds.

The company explained: “We have been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in naira going forward. Kindly note that this suspension of naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025.”

The announcement comes amid an ongoing labour crisis at the facility. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) on Friday accused the refinery of anti-labour practices, following the alleged mass sack of over 800 Nigerian workers. The union has vowed to resist the decision, threatening nationwide solidarity action.

Industry analysts fear the suspension could push petrol prices above ₦900 per litre, warning that dollar-based transactions may worsen forex pressures.

Jeremiah Olatide, CEO of Petroleumprice.ng, noted that the refinery had been instrumental in keeping pump prices lower in recent months, and warned that the latest policy shift may undermine government efforts to stabilise the fuel market.
